Ohio River Caviar affected by Hurricane Sandy

From Corey Norrod, DNR Law Enforcement

Indiana (December 11, 2012) Conservation Officers are observing the number of Indiana commercial fishing licenses up from past fishing seasons and more fishing vessels tending to commercial gear in the hopes of capturing much sought after caviar.  After the destruction left behind from Hurricane Sandy on the east coast it has now reached as far as the Ohio River basin in Indiana.

The caviar is known as “American Caviar” and it is derived from the North American Paddlefish (Polydon spathula) which inhabits the Ohio River and many other major rivers within the US.

Better Business Bureau Warns Consumers About Election-Related Scams

Better Business Bureau Warns Consumers About Election-Related Scams

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Better Business Bureau warns scammers are already gearing up for this year’s Presidential election, from robocalls offering a “free cruise” for taking a political survey, to promises that President Obama will pay your utility bill. Better Business Bureau is advising voters to be on the lookout for the growing number of scams that are likely to continue leading up to the Presidential election.

Here are a few of the election-related scams BBB is hearing about.

There will not be a “free cruise” at the end of the voting survey. These public opinion poll scams typically involve a recorded announcement offering a “free cruise” in exchange for participating in a telephone survey. At the end of the call consumers are asked for a debit or credit card number to cover “port fees” and taxes.

Scammers involving law enforcement in their act

WARRICK COUNTY, IN (WAVE) – Scammers are getting law enforcement in on their acts in southern Indiana.

Warrick County Sheriff Brett Kruse said the scammers are from foreign countries. They are calling people and telling them they won a lottery and request money for taxes.

Sheriff Kruse said the scammers then tell the people they need to wire the money to the caller. If the victim refuses the scammers say they will send a police officer to their home to collect the money. The people performing the scam then call police to perform a welfare check on the home they have just called.

"A lot of times they prey on elderly people that for their entire life, they have been conservative people that they don't gamble, they don't play games of chance, and now they're getting scammed,” said Sheriff Kruse.

Sheriff Kruse said this happened twice to the same victim in the past couple of weeks. He advises residents to never send money over the phone.

BBB tips on the top holiday scams

BBB tips on the top holiday scams

Scammers are busy this time of the year! Whether it’s on the internet, at the stores, or even at your front door…they are ready to take your hard-earned cash! Here are some tips from the BBB on scams to look out for.

Internet Scams: Be on the lookout for fake websites offering bargain prices, especially on those hard to find gifts, or the hot gifts for 2011. These sites tout “too-good-to-be-true” prices on these items, with a professional looking website and testimonials from “happy customers.” The scam artists will take your money, won’t send you the merchandise! Don’t just trust a site – check it out at www.bbb.org. Also, when shopping online, use a credit card, not your debit card. Debit cards are directly linked to your bank account, and if you never get your merchandise or it isn’t what was promised, you can dispute the charges with your credit card company.
